The next, and very imminent release of the Virtual Earth API (v6) will allow programmatic access to the z axis.
The current release targets only the x and y.
Finally we will be able to measure, visualize and analyze in full 3d.
The next release will also provide some access to the mapping meta data, and some analysis might be possible on the time axis as well. This last bit is not full confirmed yet.
